One of my goals this year was to finally focus on story driven games from my backlog. But then Koei Tecmo surprise released Warriors Abyss during a PlayStation State of Play and that resolution quickly went out the window.
While roguelike or lite games usually aren’t my thing (with Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon and Vampire Survivors as exceptions), I was curious about this new Musou style game. It’s labeled a “Hack and Dash” and I had to see what that meant. Turns out… there goes my free time again.
About the game:
Warriors Abyss combines the large scale action of classic Warriors games with a roguelike structure. You fight through a procedurally generated abyss, taking on waves of corrupted enemies with a growing team of warriors. Each run helps you unlock new skills and build a stronger team.
A key part of the gameplay is trying out different characters, combining their strengths, and figuring out the best way to survive longer in each run. It has a dark fantasy vibe, the combat is fast and addictive, focusing heavily on replayability
My experience:
The game runs really well on Steam Deck and became my go to before bedtime, often keeping me up longer than planned with the classic “just one more run” feeling. The variety of characters gives a lot of room to experiment with different playstyles.
The game is also getting regular updates. Update 2, for example, added main characters from the Atelier games, and Update 4 brought in characters from Ninja Gaiden.
If you like roguelikes or Musou style combat, it’s definitely worth checking out but don’t be surprised if your weekend disappears fast 😂
