The Gamer has spoken with Naoki Hamaguchi about Final Fantasy VII Remake's connections to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII and how Advent Children fits into the picture.
When asked about the relationship between the Remake trilogy and Advent Children, Hamaguchi said the team is not ready to clarify where the film stands in relation to Revelation until the trilogy has concluded.
"It's more accurate to consider Final Fantasy VII Advent Children to be a part of the original FFVII's canon rather than the remake series' canon. This is because the Remake series has not yet been completed, and since we have not revealed how it will conclude at this stage, we don't believe it'd be appropriate to share whether it's canon or not."
Hamaguchi also discussed the original concept behind the Remake project and how connections to Compilation titles have been intentionally included throughout the trilogy.
"The original visual direction of the Remake series was inspired by the idea of bringing the graphics of Advent Children to life as a gameplay experience. It's true that this was one of the starting points of the remake project."

"Furthermore, from the outset, this series has been built on the concept of comprehensively recreating the entire FFVII Compilation, including Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. For that reason, the details scattered throughout the Remake series that evoke connections to the Compilation are intentional."
Hamaguchi suggested that those references could become even more prominent in Revelation.
"In the final instalment, there may be even more elements derived from spin-off works that were not depicted in Rebirth."
