Final Fantasy Resonance Almost Became a Cheap Port, But Producer Nakashima Pushed for a Full RPG Experience
Final Fantasy Resonance could have turned out quite differently. When Keisuke Nakashima, associate producer on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, pitched a console version at the end of 2020, Square Enix executives suggested simply porting the mobile game instead. That route would have been much cheaper and taken considerably less time.
“I didn’t want to go down that route. I wanted to create an original version for consoles that was a full-blown gameplay experience.”
His idea was also inspired by people he met during a global press tour for Brave Exvius, many of whom were interested in the game but didn't want to play it because of its gacha mechanics.
“It was really disappointing to hear people didn’t want to play it just because of the gacha elements. That was another reason we wanted to make this a console game, to bring it to a wider audience.”
Nakashima also addressed the possibility of adapting later Brave Exvius seasons:
“We think there’s a lot of great things from season two and beyond. We’ll see how Resonance goes first, look at user feedback. If we put out a good game, that’s the first important step.”
