Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Xbox Series X/S & Switch 2 Review Round-up

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is launching on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/s tomorrow, and early reviews are now in, giving a clear look at how the port holds up. Performance and visual compromises on Switch 2 come up often, but critics are still mostly positive about the overall experience, with several outlets calling it one of the strongest RPG releases on the system so far.

Switch 2 Metacritic Score: 86 (based on 35 reviews)

Xbox Series X/S Metacritic Score: TBD (very few reviews, one 70 currently listed)

Review opinions (Switch 2 version only):

- The gameplay and world are strong enough that technical issues and frame drops are easy to overlook once you’re playing.

- Many call the Switch 2 version the best way to play on the go, even compared to Steam Deck.

- It shows Switch 2 can handle big current-gen AAA games in handheld mode.

- High overall quality mostly makes up for the visual and performance compromises.

Technical Summary:

Switch 2

- Final build much improved over the demo (noticeably better 30fps stability)

- Reduced stutters in cutscenes and open world

- Visual downgrades: lower textures, reduced foliage/NPC density, more pop-in, shorter shadows

- Still retains good character models, physics, dynamic shadows and reflections

- Dynamic 540–1080p docked with DLSS

- Digital Foundry considers it an impressive port for the hardware

Xbox Series X/S

- Stable 30fps mode (Series X native 4K in quality mode)

- 60fps mode has frame drops and broken VRR

- Camera judder bug still present

- Series S 60fps looks blurry due to low internal resolution
