FFXIV x FFVII “Beyond the Lifestream” Collaboration Had to Stay Within Realistic Limits to Avoid Affecting FFXIV’s Patch Schedule

Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the development of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV collaboration with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy in interviews with GamesRadar+ and MeinMMO during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Berlin.

According to Hamaguchi, the collaboration began after discussions with Naoki Yoshida about the release timing of Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold and Final Fantasy VII Revelation. With both projects launching close to each other, the teams decided to create a larger collaboration that would celebrate Final Fantasy VII within Final Fantasy XIV.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake team has been heavily involved in the project. Original Final Fantasy VII writer Kazushige Nojima is serving as story supervisor, while the Remake team is contributing to the story, early planning, and assets for the Evercold raid series.

Hamaguchi explained how the work is divided between the two development teams.

"Essentially, most of the development work for this collaboration is being handled by the Final Fantasy XIV development team, while we are mainly responsible for the story, the ideas, and the initial planning stages."

One of the biggest priorities during development was making sure the collaboration would fit into Final Fantasy XIV's existing update schedule. Hamaguchi explained that both teams had to carefully balance their ideas with the available resources and workload.

"One thing we absolutely have to keep in mind is Final Fantasy XIV's regular patch schedule. That's why we have to come up with realistic ideas and realistically assess the workload. But at the same time we have to be really careful that it's not impacting the FF14 patch release schedule, because then that would be putting the cart before the horse."

He added that the collaboration has already grown into a substantial project and acknowledged the additional work it created for the Final Fantasy XIV development team.

"Both teams are incredibly passionate and motivated. We've already created quite a lot of content, and I'm sure we've put a considerable burden on the Final Fantasy XIV development team—for that, I'd like to apologize to them."
