Nia DaCosta has once again talked about how Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children influenced her work on The Marvels. Her most recent comments came during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, where she responded directly to a fan question about how the film shaped her approach to designing and staging action sequences.

The discussion originated from a question about Advent Children’s fight scenes, specifically their use of motion and physics. DaCosta, currently directing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, answered by outlining her long-standing connection to the series and pointing to several Final Fantasy titles that left a lasting impression on her.
"I am a big Final Fantasy girlie. Especially VII, X (and yes X-2). Advent Children was a huge movie for me and that fight in the church between Tifa and Loz is so fucking epic. I also loved at the end everyone throwing Cloud into the sky (fuck physics). During early development of The Marvels there was a fight scene in the core of a planet where the gravity keeps shifting and I thought the way the church fight and that sequence at the end dealt with weightlessness was a great."
While the Reddit AMA brought fresh attention to the topic, DaCosta has talked about this influence before. In a November 2023 interview with IGN, she confirmed that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was already part of her reference material when she first pitched The Marvels.
In that same interview, DaCosta explained that her goal was not to make The Marvels look like a video game. Instead, she said she focused on taking what she sees as the strongest elements of games and adapting them into a film format.
