Obligatory Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 post!
After finishing the story, of course I had to write something about this game. It’s probably the most JRPG-style western game I’ve ever played. The Final Fantasy inspiration is clear, with plenty of tributes and references that fans will definitely notice. The art style and themes fit perfectly with the world-building and storytelling.
The story grabs your attention right away. Just when you think you’re about to get answers, even more questions pop up. At least, that’s how it felt for me until about halfway through. The characters are really likable, and the voice acting is spot on. Esquie is the MVP! Every conversation with him is pure gold.
The battle system focuses on parrying and dodging, appealing to fans of both turn-based and action combat. Learning enemy patterns and finally beating a boss after hours of trying is incredibly satisfying. The Picto and Lumina systems give you tons of ways to customize your builds.
The music is full of bangers! It’s a great mix of styles that really adds to the atmosphere and immersion. The main theme is fantastic. Honestly, the soundtrack is one of the biggest highlights of the game.
The overall quality and effort from the dev team is impressive. A few small personal issues don’t take away from what is a really strong game for fans of the genre. Based on how the devs are responding to feedback, I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets even better with future updates.
I finished the game in about 46 hours on stream, including some grinding. Like probably everyone else who played it, I could say a lot more—but I’ve got to get back to New Game Plus, which somehow is still super fun and motivating! 😅
