Square Enix has updated its corporate management structure, and as of February 27, 2025, Naoki Yoshida is no longer listed as a board member. While the official website still lists him as a director, the updated executive lineup confirms that Yoshida has stepped down from his role as executive director and is now only listed as an executive officer at the company.
Yoshida has been with Square Enix’s leadership since 2015, initially appointed as an executive officer before being promoted to executive director in 2018. Although his name is no longer part of the latest board of directors announcement, it is important to note that Square Enix has not officially stated whether this change is voluntary or not.
Yoshida has already expressed in the past that he did not enjoy his executive responsibilities. In a 2023 interview with NRC, he revealed:
“I recently tried to quit that work, but the company didn't agree with it. I don't want to be in the board, it's much more fun to just make games.”
This desire to focus on game development over administrative duties aligns with previous reports that Yoshida had attempted to step down from his executive director role before, but Square Enix had not agreed at that time.
While no official statement has been made about his departure from the board, Yoshida remains an important figure within Square Enix’s leadership, continuing to oversee Final Fantasy XIV and contribute to the company’s broader strategy.
