Hasbro has confirmed that the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set for Magic: The Gathering is now the highest-grossing Magic set of all time. CEO Chris Cocks highlighted its rapid success, especially when compared to previous releases.
“Lord of the Rings took six months to deliver $200 million of revenue. Final Fantasy took one day.”
Despite efforts to significantly increase the set’s production run, Hasbro was unable to fully meet global demand.
“We couldn’t produce enough. I think we increased production runs on it 4x pre-release. It was substantially, by many, many very high double-digit percentages, ahead of any other production run we’ve ever done. And we left the market wanting more. And our expectation is there’s going to be a nice long tail of backlist for the product.”
Revenue from Magic: The Gathering rose 23% in Q2 2025 compared to the same period last year. Hasbro directly credits the Final Fantasy set for this growth, which also contributed to a 16% increase in the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment.
In terms of community impact, the Final Fantasy expansion brought more new players into physical stores in just two weeks than any previous Magic set did over a full season. Chris Cocks emphasized that Final Fantasy’s synergy with the Magic audience was especially strong due to its global popularity and gaming-first identity.
“Final Fantasy, I think, is almost as strong as Lord of the Rings in terms of IP strength, if not stronger in some regions. I think it has stronger cross regional appeal, and it has probably more of a sweet spot in gaming than Lord of the Rings has, because it was kind of born from gaming.”
Hasbro plans to keep supporting the Final Fantasy set over the long term and is optimistic about future releases that target a similar fanbase.
“I feel pretty good about future collaborations and first-party sets coming next year in terms of being Final Fantasy like in terms of the types of players, the size of community, and the adjacencies we have.”
