Final Fantasy XV Cut Content Reveals a Playable but Unfinished Insomnia Prologue

Restored cut content confirms that Final Fantasy XV was originally planned to open with a playable prologue set in Insomnia. Instead of starting on the roadside, players would have begun the game inside the capital before the invasion.
The restored material, now available through a PC mod, includes several quest fragments and tutorial sections meant to introduce Noctis’ core combat mechanics. One early encounter features an Iron Giant, similar to the Platinum Demo, showing that the prologue was designed as a hands-on introduction rather than just a cinematic opening.
Insomnia itself was fully modeled. The restored map allows free exploration of the city, with complete streets, buildings, and lighting, but some peripheral assets utilize their ruined models from later chapters due to missing original files. While NPC behavior was never added, the environment works as a playable space rather than a simple test area. This version of the city also keeps its nighttime lighting and intact structures, which do not appear elsewhere in the game.
The layout and story placement closely match footage shown during the E3 2013 reveal, where Noctis, his companions, and King Regis were seen in Insomnia before the invasion.
The playable restoration was created by modder Rinual, building on earlier findings by Luthus Nox Fleuret. Collision data was restored using the Chapter 14 pre–Royal Edition map, resulting in a largely accurate city layout, though some invisible walls and blocked paths remain. A known bug related to the Flagrum mod tool can cause the train station to disappear when viewed from certain distances.
An hour-long video released by World of Eos documents the restored Insomnia in detail, covering different districts, lighting setups, and weather conditions. For now, this footage offers the most complete look at Insomnia as it existed before being removed from the final release.
