Final Fantasy XI community mourns longtime 91-year-old player following passing

A 91-year-old Japanese Final Fantasy XI player passed away on February 3, according to a post shared by her grandson. The player had been active in Final Fantasy XI for over two decades and continued playing until her health declined. According to her grandson, she had followed the game since its beta period, first watching him play before becoming a longtime player herself.
“On Tuesday, February 3, my beloved grandmother passed away at the age of 91. Up until her health declined, she was a veteran player of FFXI for nearly 20 years. She watched me play since the beta version. I bet she’s adventuring through the world of Vana’diel with Mimi (her dog) right now.”
The story quickly spread within the Final Fantasy XI community and prompted responses from members of the original development team. Game designer Kensuke Shimoda publicly offered condolences and thanked the player for her long term support of the game.
“May she rest in peace. As one of the original development team members, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for playing.“
Composer Kumi Tanioka also responded to the story. After learning from the grandson that several family members enjoy the Final Fantasy XI soundtrack and that the player especially liked the Gustaberg theme, Tanioka shared an additional message.
“Thank you for journeying through Vana’diel for nearly twenty years. I do hope you are enjoying yourself in heaven. If you have been reborn in Vana’diel, I should love to know if you occasionally hear music being carried on the wind. May you rest in peace.“
According to the grandson, both he and his grandmother played on the Valefor server, where they took part together in Ambuscade and Omen content. As a final tribute, her funeral service will feature music from the Final Fantasy XI piano collection, reflecting her long connection to the game and its soundtrack.
