Final Fantasy Still Absent in Astro Bot, But Future Inclusion Remains Possible

Final Fantasy Still Absent in Astro Bot

Final Fantasy characters still remain absent in Astro Bot, despite the series’ deep historical ties to the PlayStation brand. While Team Asobi's title includes hundreds of Bots referencing Sony’s 30-year gaming history, no characters from the Final Fantasy franchise were included at launch or in subsequent DLC.

This omission has been addressed multiple times by Nicolas Doucet, the director of Astro Bot. In an earlier interview, Doucet confirmed that the team had attempted to include Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, but the request was not approved by Square Enix.

“It’s difficult to comment on why Square Enix didn’t approve any cameos. We really respect the choice of each publisher.”

When recently asked again about the absence of Final Fantasy characters during the 2025 BAFTA Game Awards, Doucet, while smiling, gave a brief but notable response:

“Well, we’ll see.”

While the response does not confirm any upcoming content, it suggests that the developers may still be exploring the possibility. Team Asobi has previously added other missing characters, however, the Final Fantasy series remains one of the most significant omissions, especially considering the impact of Final Fantasy VII on the original PlayStation and the platform-exclusive launches of Remake and Rebirth.
