Yoshi-P on Feedback: Constructive Criticism Helps, Harsh Insults Harm Developers

ree

During a panel at PAX West last week, Naoki Yoshida addressed the issue of online abuse. He responded to a question about how he handles feedback from players, both positive and negative.

Yoshida explained that he always tries to look at feedback objectively, setting aside personal feelings to improve his current and future work. He stressed that constructive criticism is valuable, but offensive or non-constructive comments are not considered.

“There’s a person behind the games you enjoy. If you have that sort of harsh criticism, we would want to have it be constructive. I know you want to express your frustrations, but very harsh words sometimes will hurt developers very deeply, and I think this applies to any creator in the video game industry. Some of the harsh words that were thrown at them could potentially demoralize them so much that they don’t want to make video games anymore.”

Yoshida emphasized that positive feedback motivates developers and that both players and developers are part of the same community.

“Positive feedback is great and it’s a great motivator to aim to continue making those players happy.”
“We see gamers as allies or friends…I want to continue that mutual understanding.”

He also urged fans to reflect before posting potentially harmful comments.

“So whenever you are drafting your post before you hit enter you might want to reconsider.”

His comments follow a period of heavy criticism of Final Fantasy XIV, especially after the release of the Dawntrail expansion. In addition, voice actor Sena Bryer, who plays Wuk Lamat, faced online abuse and death threats after Dawntrail’s release. Yoshida has previously defended Bryer and other members of the team against such attacks.
