Available since last month in Japan and this month in the rest of the world, Square Enix Music released two new albums with reinterpretations of well-known songs.
SQ Relax - Krystell's Chillwave ($34.99 / €32.99) features twenty ambient, chillwave, and lo-fi remixes of tracks from across Square Enix’s catalog. Besides Final Fantasy, it also includes titles like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and NieR:Automata, with a focus on a relaxed and nostalgic sound. The cover art features Krystelle, the mascot from the SQUARE ENIX MUSIC Channel's 24-hour Chill BGM livestreams. The album is meant as background listening for studying, working, or unwinding.
Final Fantasy IX - House Grooves ($27.99 / €27.99) features a house-style reinterpretation of music from Final Fantasy IX, with twelve tracks arranged around deep bass and a club-focused sound. The selection includes reworked versions of themes like "A Place to Call Home", "Not Alone", and "Freya's Theme", blending the original compositions with modern electronic elements. The album presents a dance-focused take on the game’s soundtrack while keeping its recognizable melodies.
Both albums offer different ways to experience familiar tracks, from relaxed listening to a more rhythm-focused style.
I mentioned it a few times already, but I’m a big fan of the #SQkawaii album, and I’m really happy to add the SQ Relax album to my collection. Now I’m just waiting for another announcement in the series.
