Naoki Yoshida addressed the future of Final Fantasy XIV on consoles during his Gamescom 2025 interview with Feed4Gamers, focusing on PlayStation 4’s limitations, the Xbox launch, and the role of upcoming hardware.
On PlayStation 4, Yoshida made it clear that the system is reaching its technical ceiling. Updates for Final Fantasy XIV are pushing against Sony’s data regulations, despite repeated extensions made specifically for the game.
“My basic stance is that I do want to continue supporting hardware which has grown old. But I do have one concern, and that's regarding the OS of the PlayStation 4, and this is regarding the hardware regulations which were made by Sony. These regulations are related to the limit of the data, and because there's that limit of the data, well, we are continually incorporating updates for Final Fantasy XIV and we are now approaching that limit. And so for this limit that's in place, we have been asking Sony Interactive Entertainment from our side to increase that just for Final Fantasy 14, and they have kindly been doing that so far. But they've told us now that they are also reaching their limits.”
He added that when support for the console eventually has to end, the decision will be clearly explained to players.
“So I will repeat myself: I do want to provide support for platforms as long as possible. However, there will eventually come a time when the hardware is at its limits in terms of its technology, and at that point in time we would have to provide an end to the service on that hardware. But I will be sure to provide clear reasoning for that decision when I communicate it to the players.”
On Xbox, Yoshida said feedback has been consistent with PC and PlayStation, with players across all platforms mostly asking for faster patches and more content rather than platform-specific changes.
When asked about the next generation of hardware, Yoshida confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV could expand to future platforms like a new Xbox or PlayStation if they appear, since his aim is to make the game available to as many players as possible.
“Of course there is always the possibility of providing our game on those platforms, because my aim is to provide Final Fantasy XIV to as many players as possible. And so if there is an increase in platforms, we would work on providing the game on those platforms. Specifically with regards to the recent platforms, they are quite high spec and so it's easier for us to work with them compared to back in the days. So I don't think any addition of hardware is a negative in that regard.”
At the same time, Yoshida spoke personally as a player and questioned the need for new consoles right now, noting that current hardware already satisfies most players.
“But when I look at things from a gamer’s perspective, I feel that there's no real need to make new hardware, because I think right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, the PS5 or the Switch 2. And honestly, from a gamer’s perspective as well, hardware is just expensive to buy.”
