Short: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Switch 2 Is an Ambitious but Carefully Scaled Port

Digital Foundry shared its first technical impressions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth running on Switch 2, based on footage shown during the recent Nintendo Direct:

• The Switch 2 version is described as an intelligently cut back but still visually recognizable version of the PS5 release

• Footage suggests a native 720p resolution in docked mode, upscaled to 1080p

• Upscaling appears to use a lightweight DLSS solution, similar to DLSS Lite

• Hair rendering shows the most visible artifacts, appearing grainy and unstable due to scaling

• Frame rate targets 30fps, matching PS5 quality mode

• Image quality is far below PS5’s near native 4K quality mode, while PS5 performance mode relies on very soft reconstruction that differs from the Switch 2 presentation

• Environmental density is reduced, including less foliage, simplified shadows, and lower scene clutter

• Pop in may be more noticeable compared to PS5, especially in outdoor areas

• Visual compromises are subtle during normal play and become most noticeable in direct side by side comparisons

• Some footage appeared slightly choppy, potentially due to early frame pacing issues rather than consistent frame drops

• Similar frame pacing problems were seen in early Switch 2 footage of FFVII Remake but were resolved by launch

• Estimated file size is around 100GB, compared to 150GB on PS5

• The smaller install size suggests reduced texture quality, which is partially visible in the footage

Overall, Digital Foundry considers the port a plausible and impressive example of scaling a current generation title to Switch 2 hardware
