Masayoshi Soken has confirmed that he would not repeat the experience of composing for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI at the same time. Speaking with PCGamesN ahead of the Distant Worlds concert in London, Soken described the dual workload as extremely demanding.
“I would be very honest in saying that I never want to do anything like that again. Every day was a really horrible hell – really something beyond your imagination of hell. But there is a reason why I was able to achieve it."
Soken emphasized that FFXIV and FFXVI required entirely different approaches. While one demanded flexibility, the other was built around narrative structure.
“I can’t really come up with a specific example, mainly because of the sheer amount of work that was needed, but in terms of the spirit that went into the creation of XIV and XVI, I would say that it was very different. Actually, I expected it to not be that different, but I found that it was, indeed, very different. If I were to put it into very few words I would say that XIV has variety and XVI requires stories.”
Although he previously worked on Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 and A Realm Reborn simultaneously, Soken said the workload today is significantly heavier. He attributed this to advances in hardware and development expectations.
“The amount of work that I had to do was completely different. You can imagine before it was on PS3, but now we are on PS5, so all the things I had to make were just completely different in size.”
Asked if he would take on Final Fantasy XVII while continuing work on Final Fantasy XIV, Soken made it clear he would decline if both projects were simultaneous.
“If they said, ‘Would you do it simultaneously?’ I would just say no, I don’t want to. If they asked me, ‘Is it that you don’t want to do it?’ I would say no. It’s a difficult, difficult question. If I had two bodies, I would do both.”
With the Dawntrail expansion marking the start of a new multi-year plan for Final Fantasy XIV, Soken appears committed to the MMORPG, making it unlikely he will take on Final Fantasy XVII if it overlaps with his ongoing responsibilities.
