Yesterday, during my seventh gameplay stream, I finally wrapped up Lost Soul Aside after spending around 21 hours with it. It had its good moments, but for the most part, it was a tough experience.
Lost Soul Aside is an action RPG released in August for PlayStation 5 and PC. Directed by Yang Bing and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, it began as a solo project before joining Sony’s China Hero Project. After more than ten years in development, the game finally released this year.
The story behind the game’s development is impressive. Yang Bing started it in 2014 while studying in South Korea, creating the first prototype on his own. His work caught Sony’s attention and eventually led to full studio support and a global release. Inspirations from Final Fantasy XV, VII Remake, and XVI are easy to spot, especially in the tone and character design.
As for the game itself, you play as Kaser, a member of the resistance group GLIMMER. His sister Louisa is taken by a mysterious force, and his main motivation is to save her. On his journey, he meets Arena, a being who can transform into weapons, and together they travel through ruined kingdoms and different dimensions to uncover the truth.
Most areas are linear, with a few larger zones and a city hub for exploration. The combat system is the game’s strongest point. It’s fast and stylish, built around switching weapons mid-fight and chaining combos. Arena shifts between weapon forms, allowing for creative and dynamic battles.
While the combat shines, much of what surrounds it struggles to keep up. The level design becomes repetitive, and there are many bugs, clunky jumping sections, and invisible walls. The visuals and overall quality don’t feel close to what you’d expect from a 60€ release. The price dropped quickly, and it’s now available for nearly half.
If you’re a Devil May Cry fan, try the demo first. If the gameplay feels right for you, it might still be worth picking up on sale.
