At the Brasil Game Show 2025, Naoki Hamaguchi spoke with Polygon about the role of the remake trilogy in shaping the future of the Final Fantasy franchise and how expanding to new platforms supports that vision.
Hamaguchi explained that the project was built to respect the original story while becoming something new for both longtime fans and new players.
“The goal is to take the original storyline, add new things — from spin-offs and other sources — that already existed in the world of Final Fantasy VII, splitting it into three games, and by doing so make fans wonder how the story will end.”
He described the remake as a way to enhance how people view Final Fantasy VII and to create new discoveries within its familiar world.
“We want to improve the perception people have about the game and allow them to have new discoveries about a world that already existed.”
He acknowledged that reactions to the remake’s story changes have been mixed, especially among fans of the 1997 original, but said the team remains optimistic about the upcoming conclusion.
“We are aware of the naysayers, but still excited to see how people will react to the third game.”

Hamaguchi also discussed the importance of adapting to modern gaming habits. The series, once designed mainly for large-screen console play, is now being brought to handheld and mobile devices through ports like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on the upcoming Switch 2.
“Nowadays there are many different ways to play available for us. For example, the Steam Deck, that many players use now. We have more freedom now. Currently, even high-definition games aren't played at home. Considering the diversity of ways one can play a game, we believe it's important to think about it and to adapt to these new modes of play.”
Hamaguchi sees the expansion across different platforms as an essential step in making Final Fantasy VII accessible to more players and shaping the future of the Final Fantasy franchise. By adapting to how and where players experience games, he hopes the remake project will help ensure the series continues to grow with each new generation.
