Final Fantasy X Team Worked to Deliver the Best Possible Experience, Believing It Could Be Their Last Single-Player RPG

Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed in a new interview with Game Informer, published in the magazine's latest issue, that the development team believed Final Fantasy X could be their last single-player RPG. At the time, Final Fantasy XI had already been announced before Final Fantasy X's release, contributing to the uncertainty around the future of single-player RPGs:
“There was a general sense at the time that the future would be entirely online, as symbolized by the announcement of Final Fantasy XI. For that reason, we were determined to deliver the best possible experience, working under the assumption that Final Fantasy X could be our last single-player RPG.”
During the same Game Informer interview, Kitase also discussed Final Fantasy X's influence on the series:
“Through Final Fantasy X, the fundamental format of an RPG that evokes emotion through its characters and dramatic storytelling reached a certain level of maturity, and this has gone on to shape the evolution of the Final Fantasy series as we know it today.”
