Final Fantasy VII Revelation Is the Trilogy Finale, But What Comes Next Remains Open
In an interview with Digital Braves, Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase discussed the future of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project beyond Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
“For the Remake series specifically, this is being designed as the finale of this trilogy,”
Hamaguchi was also asked about the idea of a further conclusion beyond the trilogy.
“So we really aren’t thinking in terms of what’s the true ending, we don’t have any plans like that.”
Kitase then looked back at the team's expectations when the original Final Fantasy VII was completed.
“When we created the original Final Fantasy VII, we really thought like, ‘Okay, we’re done now. We can move on.'”
The original game ultimately received several follow-up projects, and Kitase connected that development to the lasting popularity of its characters and the response from fans.
“The characters were so popular and so lasting, it really… The fan reaction to these characters really is what brought on the spinoff games as well like Advent Children and Crisis Core.”
That history provides some context for how Kitase views the future of the current project, even with Revelation being treated as the conclusion of the trilogy.
“While we’re putting our all into Revelation and making sure it’s the best quality and we can confidently say it’s the end of the series, who knows what’s going to happen with fan reaction and how people come to enjoy this series and this finale,”
For now, Revelation is the planned finale of the Remake trilogy and has two confirmed story DLCs, with one focusing on Sephiroth and another featuring Vincent and the Turks. With additional Revelation content already announced, whether the project could eventually expand further remains open.
