3 weeks ago, after 13 stream sessions, we finally wrapped up Chrono Trigger. So here is the long overdue post.
First, for anyone not familiar: Chrono Trigger is a classic SNES RPG where the main character Crono is accidentally sent across different time periods. You travel through the past, present, and future, recruit a party of characters with different backgrounds, and try to prevent a global apocalypse. The game uses visible enemies on the map and a Tech system that allows combo attacks between characters for stronger abilities. It was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi with character and art design by Akira Toriyama. It also features multiple endings depending on your choices and when you challenge the final boss.
I played the PC version that I picked up cheaply during a sale. However, after reading about issues with the port, I decided to mod it to bring back the original SNES style and feel. The modded version unfortunately had a bug where the game could crash after switching rooms a certain number of times. Luckily, the game auto saves after changing areas, so it still worked fine for streaming. I turned it into a fun stream rule: every time the game crashed or I died, I opened a booster pack of cards.
Overall, I really enjoyed the game. It has a lot of clever ideas that keep surprising the player and makes you want to replay it. I am a big fan of time travel stories, so the story worked really well for me. I also liked how choices can affect different time periods. The characters are very likeable. My favorite was definitely Ayla, who was always fun in dialogue and in her time period. My final party setup was Ayla for high damage, Robo as a healer and ranged laser support, and Magus for area magic damage.
I am glad I finally cleared this from my backlog and I can understand why it is so highly regarded and often mentioned in remake discussions.
Did you play Chrono Trigger? Which character and time period did you enjoy the most?
