Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles launches with a unique approach that avoids labeling the game as a remake or remaster. The developers at Square Enix intentionally used the “Ivalice Chronicles” subtitle to reflect both the involvement of original creators and the desire to build a new experience while respecting the 1997 original.
“Several of the original members, including Yasumi Matsuno and Hiroshi Minagawa, as well as myself, are involved in this project. With this background, rather than simply making a remaster, we discussed with the producer Shoichi Matsuzawa and proceeded from the perspective of, ‘If we were to create a new Final Fantasy Tactics in 2025 based on the original version, what would that look like?’

"If this were a remake, we would have rebuilt the graphics and systems from scratch. If it were a remaster, we would have used the original assets while improving the resolution. But this work is neither. That said, among the two versions included, the Classic version might be considered closer to what is conventionally called a ‘remaster.’”
