Last Saturday, after three months of streaming, we finally finished Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered on PS4/PS5. Here are some short thoughts based on my experience.
Right from the start, it is clear that this game is much better when played with other people. Solo play does not flow very well and often feels slow or tedious. In some situations it even felt unfair. I was caught several times in attack loops by multiple enemies, which led to unavoidable deaths with no real chance to escape.
It took a while to get used to the unique battle system and the related character upgrade mechanics. Most dungeons were quite easy, except for a few badly designed boss fights and damage sponge enemies. The final dungeon was a different story. My first attempt was completely hopeless, so I had to grind and level up. In the end, I was overleveled and cleared it without much trouble 😅
The most annoying part for me was the village and family management. It never felt fun and quickly turned into a chore, so I mostly ignored that aspect later on.
One thing that really stands out is the music. Some tracks are incredibly catchy and are still stuck in my head a week later. I also enjoyed the visual style, which grew on me over time.
Overall, the game was a mix of fun, charming, and frustrating moments. I am still glad I finally played it, finished it, and can cross it off my list. That said, I am definitely not going for the platinum trophy.
What do you think about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles? Did you play the original or the remaster?
PS: Tomorrow I will check out the newly released Code Vein II, and next week we will probably start Parasite Eve on stream. Feel free to join and hang out!

About Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is an action role-playing game developed by The Game Designers Studio and published by Nintendo for the GameCube. It was released in 2003 in Japan and in 2004 in North America, Europe, and Australia. A remastered version for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android, and iOS was released in August 2020. A spin-off of the Final Fantasy series and the start of the Crystal Chronicles subseries, it was the first Final Fantasy game released on a Nintendo home console since Final Fantasy VI in 1994.
Players take on the role of adventurers traveling in a caravan, gathering magical fuel for crystals that protect the world’s settlements from the destructive Miasma. In single-player, the player escorts a vessel carrying the crystal’s energy, defending it from enemies and solving puzzles to move forward. Multiplayer uses Game Boy Advance systems connected with a link cable and allows up to four players to protect the vessel together.
