Naoki Hamaguchi: “We Want to Be Good Enough Creators to Do Better Than AI”

ree

In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Naoki Hamaguchi shared his thoughts on the growing use of artificial intelligence in the game industry. While acknowledging its increasing presence, he said that using AI for creative work is not something he supports at this stage.

“The use of AI on the creative side of game development, certainly at the moment, is not something that I could really go ahead with.”

He explained that Square Enix currently has no formal policy regarding AI but said he personally believes creativity should remain human-led. He also expressed confidence in his team’s ability to uphold that standard.

“I would like to think, as a creator and as part of my creative team, that however much AI might try and intrude and take part in the creative side of things, as humans, as my team, we would want to be good enough creators that we could do better than AI, and we’re definitely going to push that. That’s the approach I want to take.”

Although he doesn’t completely rule out AI, he sees its role as supportive rather than creative, such as helping gather materials or references. He also noted that improving development efficiency involves broader issues beyond AI itself.

“The idea that game creation is a very complicated business is a lot of different working moving parts and things to be aware of, certainly in terms of the money-making side of it, assigning staff, and managing teams.”
