Naoki Hamaguchi Wants Final Fantasy VII Revelation to Surpass Rebirth on Switch 2

In an interview with Nintendo Everything, Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the challenges of developing Final Fantasy VII Revelation for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other platforms. With the game being larger in size and scope than the previous two entries, the team plans to build on its experience with Rebirth to improve graphics quality and presentation.

“If we were trying to do that without the experience we had doing Revelation – a completely fresh team coming in where we’ve got to develop for Switch 2 at the same time as the other platforms – I don’t think we’d do very well. That would be a very big challenge. I’m not sure we could achieve it if we were doing it from scratch.”

Hamaguchi said the experience gained from bringing Rebirth to other platforms was key to achieving the desired results. The team was satisfied with the quality of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Rebirth, but it wants to go further with the new game rather than let simultaneous multiplatform development limit its ambitions.

“The idea is to take the graphics quality and the presentation even higher than it was on Rebirth to the top level it can be.”

The team intends to build on the optimization work completed for Rebirth, using the knowledge gained from that release to achieve better results on Nintendo Switch 2 and help bridge the gap on lower-spec platforms.

“So we really didn’t want to let the fact we’re doing it multiplatform limit the game’s quality.”

Hamaguchi did clarify, however, that this will not translate into across-the-board improvements on Nintendo Switch 2.

“It’s not that everything is much higher on Switch 2, just because we pushed it that far. But with optimization, it should all come out as a really good result in the end.”
