Naoki Hamaguchi Explains Why Final Fantasy VII Revelation Uses Four FITS Per Character

Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the FITS system in Final Fantasy VII Revelation during an interview with GamesRadar+ at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Berlin.

FITS, short for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear, serves as the game's job system. Each character has four different FITS, which change both their combat capabilities and appearance. Cloud has already been shown with a Warrior "FIT", while Tifa has been shown with a Black Mage "FIT".

Hamaguchi addressed the number of FITS available in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, explaining that including 20 or 30 jobs like some earlier Final Fantasy games featured is no longer realistic for a modern standalone title.

"It did make me realize all over again how hard it is to develop games these days. When you look at some of the early Final Fantasy games that have job systems, you could put a lot in there,"

Hamaguchi added that including that many jobs today is "just insanely difficult" unless a game is an ongoing title like Final Fantasy XIV that can add content bit-by-bit over time.

He explained that modern games require much more work for each job, as characters need their own animations and detailed assets compared to the simpler presentation of older pixel-based Final Fantasy titles.

Despite having four FITS per character, Hamaguchi believes the system provides a broad range of strategic options for players.

"The FITS system has four different outfits for each character, and each of those is quite a defined role. In the end, that has added quite a lot of breadth of strategy for players to engage with, so I think it has resulted in a really good addition to the battle system. Even though we only have four FITS, we have a lot of characters, so it was quite a lot of work."
