Japanese Studies Reveal Average Age of Final Fantasy Fans at 42 and One of Japan’s Most Active Fandoms

Recent data presented at the Nikkei Cross Trend Forum 2025 confirms that Final Fantasy continues to be one of Japan’s most actively supported entertainment brands. According to GEM Partners, which regularly tracks fan engagement across entertainment IPs, Final Fantasy remains among the titles with the highest levels of dedicated support in Japan’s gaming community.
The findings are based on GEM Partners’ “Oshi Entertainment Brand Scope,” a monthly survey of 30,000 people between the ages of 15 and 69. This ongoing research tracks fan enthusiasm and engagement beyond typical sales metrics, analyzing how deeply players remain connected to a franchise. Final Fantasy’s sustained position within this data highlights its strong presence among Japan’s most active fandoms even in 2025.
Additional demographic research from GEM Partners, based on responses from 180,000 people, shows that the average age of a Final Fantasy player in Japan is now 42 with a 70:30 male-to-female ratio. Dragon Quest shares the same average, pointing to a wider trend of aging core audiences in these long-running franchises.
For comparison, the average age of Nintendo players sits lower at around 30 years old, with a more balanced gender ratio across its various titles. This reflects Nintendo’s broader market approach, aiming for family-friendly and multi-generational appeal, in contrast to the aging core audiences of franchises like Final Fantasy.
While the Final Fantasy fanbase tends to be older, GEM’s analysis shows that the series still enjoys strong fan engagement.
