ICYMI: Mod Compatibility Restored for Final Fantasy VII 2026 Steam & GOG Re-release

Mod support for the newly re-released PC version of Final Fantasy VII has returned, just days after the updated version launched on Steam and GOG.com.

Square Enix released the new PC version on February 24, 2026, replacing the older 2013 Steam release. That version has now been delisted from sale but remains available to existing owners. The new build includes several quality of life features such as 3× speed mode, an option to disable random encounters, battle enhancement mode, and autosave.

However, the update initially broke compatibility with many existing mods, which historically rely on community tools like the 7th Heaven mod manager and the FFNx modding platform.

Within days of launch, modding teams began restoring support. Tsunamods announced that 7th Heaven and FFNx entered an initial testing phase for the 2026 release on both Steam and GOG, enabling players to run modded versions again via beta builds.

According to the Tsunamods Discord, players can resume modding by switching their 7th Heaven and FFNx settings to the "Canary" branch. The version is still in beta, and the team is actively seeking community feedback and bug reports.

Mod projects are already confirming compatibility. The fan project Shinra Archaeology Cut, which features a revised translation and optional restored cut content, is fully supported on the new Steam and GOG releases.
