Final Fantasy XIV Assistant Director Says Arcadion Will Guide Future Raids

Final Fantasy XIV assistant director Tsuyoshi Yokozawa says the Arcadion raid series has become a “firm guideline” for the team’s future battle content, especially as they prepare for the Evercold expansion.

In a new interview with GamesRadar+, Yokozawa reflected on how raid design has evolved. After Pandæmonium, the team heavily prioritized player comfort and stress reduction. While it made content more accessible, he admitted it came with downsides.

"This approach did help make content more accessible, but at the same time… there were moments where it unintentionally limited our ability to explore more creative ideas.”

To fix that, they deliberately looked backward for inspiration.

“We decided that with the Arcadion, we would return to the mindset we had during the Heavensward era… focused first and foremost on ‘novel experiences and surprises,’ approaching encounter design with a freer, more flexible perspective.”

The result was a raid tier that felt fresh and exciting for many players. Yokozawa also explained how they handled difficulty across modes:

“The Normal raid allows players to experience the basic movements of the encounter. Then in Savage, we build on that foundation by layering in more complex decision-making and stricter, more demanding reactions.”

He noted that keeping the core identity of each fight consistent between Normal and Savage while properly differentiating the challenge was especially difficult, particularly with AAC Cruiserweight M3.

When asked why Arcadion has been so well received, Yokozawa highlighted three key factors. Beyond the return to creative design, he emphasized deeper boss characters and the unique presentation:

“Rather than treating the bosses simply as one-off enemies to be defeated, we placed strong emphasis on each character’s unique personalities with the goal of creating characters that players could continue to enjoy and appreciate over the long term.”

He also praised the live commentary for adding immersion, making players feel like they’re part of a real event.

Looking ahead, the team is carrying several big lessons into future raids:

“Our experience with the Arcadion has served as a firm guideline for our future battle content development… we would like to strongly carry over the following three points in particular: Pursuit of unique experiences without fear of risk… Creation of boss characters that players can genuinely connect with… Designing gameplay that allows for flexible problem-solving.”

Yokozawa added that they want to be more deliberate about giving players room to recover and get creative using healing, resurrection, and limit breaks, rather than forcing one specific strategy.

On a more personal note, he named Honey B. Lovely as one of his favorites:

“She has a profound sense of professionalism as an idol… It’s that intense contrast that I find so compelling. It feels like her inescapable ‘human side’ really comes through in those moments.”
