Final Fantasy VII Revelation Physical Edition Requires a Download to Avoid Quality Compromises

Naoki Hamaguchi has addressed the controversy surrounding Final Fantasy VII Revelation's physical release, explaining why the team decided to require a download rather than compromise the game's quality. In an IGN interview, the director said the team discussed using the same disc capacity as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but concluded that this would have affected the game's fidelity and quality.

“But if we were to do that, it would mean that we would have to make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality of the game. So as a development team, we didn't want to do that. We didn't want to make any compromises for the game.”

That left the team with the approach used for the physical edition.

“So realistically, the only choice that we had was to release this physical disc, but with certain sections of the game being a digital download format through the physical disc.”

Hamaguchi acknowledged that the decision will not satisfy everyone, while saying that he is still pleased Revelation is receiving a physical release.

“With that being said, I completely understand that not all players might be happy with this decision, but at the same time, I am happy that we were still able to release a physical format of the game. So I am quite satisfied with the end results as well.”

Hamaguchi also addressed the issue in an official X statement, saying that physical media capacity is limited across platforms and that compromising the final chapter to achieve a fully on-disc release would not be in the best interest of many fans. He did not explain why a multi-disc release was not considered, so that part of the decision remains unknown.
