A playable demo of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest has been released for the Sega Mega Drive. The fan-made project, created by NicoMegadrive (Nikolow) with music by Laurent Crouzet, recreates the early section of the 1992 SNES title.
The demo includes the Hill of Destiny, the town of Foresta, and the battle against the Minotaur in the Level Forest, with Kaeli as a recruitable character. While a few text and script errors remain, they are expected to be corrected in later revisions. The demo is available now on GitHub.
The soundtrack work is handled by Laurent Crouzet, who is adapting Final Fantasy Mystic Quest’s original compositions for the YM2612 sound chip. Nikolow explained that the project was mainly a way to learn RPG development on the Mega Drive and that he doesn’t plan to complete a full port. After releasing this demo, he intends to move on and create his own original RPG.
Though the project won’t expand beyond this demo, it offers a glimpse of how the SNES RPG might have looked and sounded on Sega hardware.
