Final Fantasy Composer Kumi Tanioka Warns About AI-Generated Album Using Her Name

Kumi Tanioka, known for her music in Final Fantasy XI and the Crystal Chronicles series, has spoken out about an album released under her name on major streaming services this month. The album, titled A Village Built on Wind, currently appears on her verified Spotify profile next to her actual releases, including those connected to the Crystal Chronicles series.

Tanioka posted a screenshot of the release on her personal X account and made clear she had no involvement.

"Uh, somehow an album that isn’t something I made is being distributed as “kumi tanioka” on various streaming services, but… is this… AI??? Someone with the same name??? In any case, this album is not something I made. Please enjoy it as someone else’s album…"

A short time later, Digital Sonic Design, which has released some of Tanioka’s albums, issued its own statement. The label said that YouTube Music had determined that the tracks were AI-generated. The tracks do not infringe Tanioka’s copyrights and are described as completely unrelated to her work. The label said it cannot fully exclude the chance of identical names, yet the placement under her profile creates a clear risk of confusion for listeners.

“Regarding this album, we confirmed directly with Ms. Tanioka herself, and it consists of tracks that are completely unrelated to her own works. There is no infringement of the musical rights, and we cannot rule out the simple possibility of someone with the same name. However, it is listed under the name “Kumi Tanioka” on major streaming services. As our label has also released albums by Ms. Tanioka, we are concerned that this may cause misunderstanding or confusion among fans. Additionally, on YouTube Music these tracks have been determined to be AI-generated. We consider this a case of someone exploiting a systemic vulnerability in the streaming services. Since there have been past instances of unofficial unreleased tracks being recreated by ear and distributed, it prompts us to consider some form of response.”
