FFVII Ever Crisis Academy Event: From Concept to Full Release

The Ever Crisis Academy Seven event in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is widely believed to have started as an April Fools’ Day 2025 joke. In an interview with Siliconera, Producer Shoichi Ichikawa shared some background on how the event came to be and how the characters were chosen.

According to Ichikawa, the idea came from the younger members of the development team.

"Initially, it came from the younger members of the development team who voiced their desire to do a school-themed event."

To move forward with the idea, the team consulted with Tetsuya Nomura, leveraging the flexibility offered by Ever Crisis’s live service model.

"One of the strengths of this title lies in its unique standing as a Live Ops game that takes on new endeavors that would be difficult to achieve in the original FFVII, such as seasonal events and gear, so we consulted [Tetsuya] Nomura-san and made this idea a reality."

When designing the characters for the event, the art team pitched a version of Aerith with a more exaggerated, playful tone.

"This was a playful idea on the part of the staff."

Despite the new look, the team wanted Aerith to stay true to her character, focusing on her affection for flowers and her bond with Zack.

"It was visually impactful but also showed a side that was very Aerith-like, such as her fondness for flowers, and we thought we could depict the relationship between Zack and Aerith that is unique to this world setting."

In the event, Aerith takes on the role of a sukeban—a female delinquent leader common in Japanese media. While other characters such as Cid, Vincent, and Yuffie didn’t appear this time, Ichikawa indicated they’re open to including more in future events.

"Yes, there were many different ideas. I am hoping that we will be able to introduce other characters in some form in the future as well."

He also commented on the broader direction of Ever Crisis and the encouragement the team feels from the community’s engagement online.

"We are truly encouraged to see everyone enjoying the game and posting on social media."

Ichikawa concluded by reaffirming the team’s intention to continue pushing creative boundaries through Ever Crisis.

"This time, we took on the endeavor of developing Ever Crisis Academy Seven, consisting of content that would be quite a challenge to realize in the original FFVII. We will continue to develop new content and explore various themes for Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, so please keep an eye out for future updates."
