Adam Rippon has completed a fan project that brings color support to all four Final Fantasy titles originally released on the Game Boy. The updated versions cover Final Fantasy Legend I, II, and III, along with Final Fantasy Adventure, and are designed to run on Game Boy Color hardware as well as modern emulators.
Rippon explained that the project started with Final Fantasy Legend I and expanded after community interest in the sequels and Final Fantasy Adventure.
"Awhile back I got the bug to go back and play some Gameboy RPGs, and I’d never played the Final Fantasy Legend games. I had read all about them in Nintendo Power as a kid, so I had vague memories of pretty much the entire games, but when I started playing I just couldn’t help but wish they were in color. And then I started messing around with some assembly, which I hadn’t done for like 20 years. Buuuut it came back pretty quick, and… well… one thing lead to another and here we are! FFL1 DX! Enjoy!"
The full projects have been published as open-source, with detailed documentation available on GitHub and other community platforms. Players can apply the updates to their own legally obtained copies of the games to experience them with newly designed color palettes.
"My big rule was no touching the original pixel art, since I didn't want to mess with the original artists' vision. So that limitation is why I chose some of the colors that I did, and why there is some blockiness in places. I did them all while playing through them, FFL1 and FFA for the first time. I'd had FFL3 as a kid, although I don't think I'd ever beaten it prior to this project. The others I'd just read about in Nintendo Power and had a pretty strong memory of those articles but not the actual games."

About Final Fantasy Legend
The Final Fantasy Legend, originally released in Japan as Makai Toushi Sa・Ga is a 1989 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Game Boy. It was originally released in Japan in December 1989 and North America in September 1990. It is the first game in the SaGa series and the first role-playing game for the system. Square translated the game into English for worldwide release and renamed it, linking it with the Final Fantasy series to improve marketing. Sunsoft re-released it in North America during 1998; Square followed with a Japan-exclusive remake released for the WonderSwan Color and mobile phones in 2002 and 2007 respectively, it was also ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020 and later ported to Android, iOS and Microsoft Windows in 2021.
The Final Fantasy Legend operates on a turn-based system similar to that of Final Fantasy II. The game's characters battle monsters and fiends using a variety of weapons, armor, and skills that develop through the player's actions. The game follows the story of four heroes who attempt to scale a tower at the center of the world that supposedly leads to paradise. The four heroes may belong to one of three character classes, each housing a unique customization path.
