DLC for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Was Seriously Considered, Part 3 Quality Prioritized Instead

Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed in an interview with ntower that the development team seriously considered a Story DLC for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth right up until the final planning stage, but ultimately decided against it.

The reason was that developing a DLC alongside Part 3 would risk delaying the finale and potentially compromising its quality. The team’s priority is now to deliver the trilogy’s conclusion as fast and as strong as possible.

"As for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, we seriously considered developing a Story DLC right up until immediately before the official start of the planning phase. However, within the framework of a long-term trilogy, we concluded that developing a DLC for the second part in parallel with work on the third would inevitably impact the schedule and the overall quality of the final game. At that point, I felt that my primary task was not to add new content, but to deliver the third part to fans as quickly as possible in a quality that would fully satisfy them."

Hamaguchi added that DLC beyond Part 3 could still happen after its release, depending on fan demand and support.

"Regarding DLCs beyond the third part, this will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support FINAL FANTASY VII as a title and as a franchise. If there is significant demand, we would certainly be open to proactively exploring those possibilities."
