Cloud Shaped the Remake Trilogy’s Combat System and Revelation Also Has to Make It Work Without Him

Speaking to DualShockers, Naoki Hamaguchi explained that Cloud was the foundation of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy's combat system, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation now has to make that system work during a part of the story where Cloud is not with the party.
“I think the most important character, especially for the first game, is Cloud. We knew that we had to get him right, and we worked very hard to make sure he was a good character to play as.”
Battle designer Teruki Endo had previously described Cloud as the “central spine” of the combat system, with his moveset serving as the basis for the new system. Braver was one example of an iconic move that the team had to adapt while keeping the original feel of the character.
Based on the story we know from the original Final Fantasy VII, Revelation reaches the part of the story where Cloud is absent from the party. That means the combat system has to remain effective and enjoyable even when the character it was originally built around is unavailable.
“We really wanted all the characters to be all-rounders. There's never a situation where [players] go, 'Oh shoot, this character doesn't really work for this battle'. That was never part of the plan. Any character you choose is capable of taking part in any battle and playing hundreds of hours [with].”
