Capcom has shared additional background details on how the collaboration with Square Enix to bring Tifa into Street Fighter 6 came together.
According to Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama, discussions between Capcom and Square Enix began roughly three years before the announcement. The initial contact did not immediately focus on a specific character, but instead started as general conversations about a potential collaboration between the two companies. These early talks were initiated through a mutual friend at Square Enix who was also interested in Street Fighter 6, which gradually developed into more concrete crossover discussions.
Tifa was not the first concept discussed internally, but she emerged as the most suitable option as the collaboration progressed. While Nakayama jokingly admitted he personally loves older Final Fantasy martial artists like Yang (FFIV) and Sabin (FFVI), he noted that "now is not the time" for them, and the team ultimately concluded that Tifa’s close-range martial arts based fighting style aligned naturally with Street Fighter’s core combat structure. Her established identity as a hand to hand fighter within Final Fantasy VII played a central role in her selection.

The collaboration also strengthened through industry connections between both teams. Nakayama noted that discussions developed further after joint appearances with Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi at Tokyo Game Show events, helping formalize the working relationship between Capcom and Square Enix during the planning phase.
Capcom confirmed that Tifa’s implementation is subject to direct oversight from Square Enix. The Final Fantasy VII development team provides reference materials, while key figures including Tetsuya Nomura review and approve her design and presentation. Adjustments to visual elements and animation details are made based on feedback from Square Enix before final integration into the game.
The developers also clarified that Tifa’s Materia-related gameplay system should not be interpreted as a direct recreation of Final Fantasy VII mechanics. Instead, it is being adapted into a character specific system designed exclusively for her within Street Fighter 6. The team emphasized that this mechanic may differ significantly from player expectations and is being built as a unique gameplay element rather than a shared system across the roster.
Capcom also confirmed that Tifa’s development is already underway in parallel with other Year 4 characters, with core gameplay concepts established but still undergoing refinement through ongoing development and review cycles with Square Enix.
