Naoki Hamaguchi has commented on the development direction of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 in a recent Famitsu interview, focusing on early multiplatform planning and the structural overhaul behind the trilogy’s final entry.
The interview coincides with the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, a rollout that Hamaguchi notes helps establish the groundwork for the finale. While specific release timing for Part 3 remains unconfirmed, Hamaguchi says Square Enix is considering how best to handle multiplatform release timing in a way that aligns both with business goals and player expectations.
“We cannot yet provide specific details regarding the release timing, What we have strongly felt while expanding onto multiple platforms is that users want to experience the excitement at the same time.”

This shared community experience has fundamentally changed how the third entry is being built from the ground up. According to Hamaguchi, modern large-scale development requires multiplatform architecture from the earliest stages of production. The traditional model of building a game for one specific console and handing it off to a porting team later is no longer viable.
“From rendering and streaming to memory design and asset configuration, it’s necessary to design with multiple environments in mind from the start, the era of ‘the porting team working hard later’ is over.”
Lessons learned from bringing Remake and Rebirth to hardware like the Switch 2 are already being baked into Part 3's engine. Hamaguchi noted that modern hardware specifications are no longer the defining factor of a game's experience. Instead, the focus is on ensuring consistent, deep immersion so players can engage with the world with equal enthusiasm, regardless of their preferred device.
Finally, Hamaguchi closed with a definitive promise to fans to see the ambitious trilogy through to a polished conclusion.
“That’s why we absolutely won’t leave the third installment in an incomplete state. I want to bring it to a point where I can proudly say, ‘I have completed the Final Fantasy VII Remake series to the very end.’”
