Not News - Sephiroth’s Masamune Tested by Martial Arts Master in Real-Life Combat Demo

Tetsuya Nomura recently shared new details about Sephiroth’s iconic sword, the Masamune. In an interview with Polygon, he discussed the weapon’s changing length, its origin within the Final Fantasy VII universe, and how its portrayal has evolved across different games.

Back in March, the YouTube channel Hikabushiki Gaisha Itsuka Yaru released a video showing how a replica of the Masamune could actually be used in real combat. The demonstration was led by Nobuhide Seki, head of the Asayama Ichiden-ryū school of classical Japanese martial arts.

Seki used a five-shaku sword (about 180 centimeters long) similar to Sephiroth’s blade. He demonstrated that with proper technique, such a long sword can be drawn smoothly and used effectively in combat. The video featured one-on-one sparring sequences where Seki used the blade’s length to control distance, hide his reach from opponents, and strike with precision without relying on brute strength.

He also showed how a longer sword could be useful in fights against multiple opponents, helping to keep them at a distance and break up their coordination. While the Masamune might look exaggerated in the games, its design isn’t entirely unrealistic when handled with skill and discipline.
