After more than two years since placing my preorder, the hardcover edition of [lock-on] 006 finally arrived at my doorstep. Marketed as a “magazine,” this release is anything but small. It comes in at over 500 pages filled with essays, interviews, and artwork exploring gaming culture, with Final Fantasy as the main focus this time.
I first reported on its announcement and quickly secured my copy. Out of the different versions, I chose the hardcover because it features an exclusive Yoshitaka Amano illustration of Terra created just for this issue. Seeing it in person is even better than I expected. The book also includes a folded A3 poster of this artwork and a custom OBI strip.
The content begins with individual interviews with Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshitaka Amano, and Nobuo Uematsu. Each main Final Fantasy title then gets its own dedicated chapter, combined with art contributions from a variety of artists. With this mix of essays and concept pieces, the volume feels more like a collector’s art book than a typical magazine.
It’s not only about Final Fantasy though. Other games such as Persona 5, The Legend of Zelda, and Gravity Rush are also covered. Still, Final Fantasy clearly takes center stage.
Lost in Cult released three editions: softcover, hardcover (limited to 2000 copies), and a deluxe edition with extra items. The hardcover feels like the perfect balance: premium build quality and Final Fantasy highlights without the extra merch I wasn’t interested in.
For any Final Fantasy fan, this feels like a love letter to the series and its creators. A sturdy, premium book that looks great on the shelf and is packed with content worth revisiting.
