GOG Confirms Progress on Wishlist Titles, Final Fantasy VII Among Top Requests

During an interview with Kiwi Talkz, GOG staff addressed why Final Fantasy VII has not yet been released on the DRM-free platform.

Adam Ziółkowski, technical producer at GOG, commented:

“It is a good question,” he said when asked about Final Fantasy VII, describing it as “really the best game that was ever created.”

“For me, it was the first game that actually showed that video games can be much more than just pure entertainment.”

Senior business developer Marcin Paczyński confirmed the strong demand for the title on GOG. Final Fantasy VII currently sits near the top of the platform’s “Dreamlist” with almost 85,000 votes.

“So you can be sure that we are working on all of those games from the top of our Dreamlist, and we've made progress on some of those titles. So fingers crossed, we will see some of them on GOG, releasing soon. Maybe Final Fantasy will be one of them.”

When asked about the likelihood of older Japanese titles releasing on GOG, Paczyński explained:

“The Japanese companies seem to realize the value of releasing the games – especially their older titles – without any DRM for the purpose of [...] game preservation, keeping those games alive.”

Although the decision rests with Square Enix, Paczyński emphasized that attitudes in Japan toward DRM-free releases are beginning to shift, improving the chances that Final Fantasy VII could eventually appear on GOG.
