Final Fantasy XI Player's Two-Decade Journey Concludes, Community Honors Her Legacy

A Final Fantasy XI player’s 21-year journey got a lot of attention after her granddaughter posted a tribute video on TikTok after she passed away in mid-May 2025.
TikTok user amabigaill posted the video on May 25, showing the characters her grandmother had created and played since 2004. The characters—Jessimay, Dabbaby, Bakimmy, and Readykat—were named after her four oldest granddaughters. Her account had remained active on the Asura server for more than 20 years.
Over time, the grandmother built strong friendships within the Final Fantasy XI community and kept in regular contact with a group of younger players she met online. In 2010, several of them even traveled to meet her in person for dinner. One of those friends stayed in touch over the years, sharing family photos and life updates.
“I am the ‘very grown’ player mentioned in the description. The player known as Jessimay had a profound effect on the Asura server and my life for decades. She was one of my very best friends from the time I was a young adult until her death.”
The TikTok post quickly went viral, gaining over 3.5 million views and thousands of comments, including messages from players who had shared time with her in-game. Some encouraged amabigaill to contact her grandmother’s Free Company or guild to let them know about her passing.
On May 27, amabigaill shared an update confirming that several of her grandmother’s in-game friends had already reached out through messages. The community responded with personal stories of similar experiences and losses in MMO communities.
Square Enix also responded directly in the comments:
“💞We honor your grandma’s dedication and passion for Final Fantasy XI, a journey she’s shared with the community for over 21 years.”
“She will be deeply missed, but her legacy and the memories she created will live on forever.”
