Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles: Developers Discuss PSP Fixes and Original's Cut Content

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles aims to deliver a definitive modern version of the 1997 tactical RPG. The remake fixes long-standing technical issues from the PSP version The War of the Lions while keeping the original gameplay intact.

In an Asia-exclusive interview with GamerBraves.com, Director Kazutoyo Maehiro, original scenario writer Yasumi Matsuno, and Producer Shoichi Matsuzawa explained their approach to the project.

Maehiro said the team prioritized authenticity over new additions:

““Of course, we considered adding new jobs, abilities, and characters, as well as content added in Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. However, we made a deliberate decision to preserve the original version as faithfully as possible. Rather than alter what already worked so well, as a first step in bringing Final Fantasy Tactics back to the modern era, we chose to focus on the original characters, jobs, and the gameplay experience as it was.””

The team also fixed the PSP version’s performance problems, which had frustrated players for years:

“We’ve addressed and resolved all the issues that were present in Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, including VFX, sound effects, and rendering problems”

Matsuno reflected on the challenges of the original development, recalling the pressure and compromises that shaped the 1997 release:

“The project that became Final Fantasy Tactics was one of constant cuts and compromises. As a creator, there were still so many things I left unfinished.”

“There were several characters and jobs that were ultimately cut from the project. However, I don’t think there’s much point in discussing those now.”

With The Ivalice Chronicles, Square Enix aims to present the game as it was originally envisioned, polished for modern platforms and free from the technical limitations of past releases.
