According to a post on the AnandTech forums, a new AMD chip codenamed “Gainsborough” has appeared in the Adrenalin 26.9.2 driver, potentially pointing to Valve’s next Final Fantasy VII-inspired processor.

The APU (a type of processor that combines both a CPU and a GPU) used in the Steam Deck is officially codenamed by AMD as "Van Gogh." However, internally at Valve, the APUs have received codenames referencing Final Fantasy VII characters. The 7nm version used in the LCD version of the Steam Deck is named "Aerith," while the 6nm APU used in the updated OLED version of the Steam Deck is referred to as "Sephiroth."

The chip has no official connection to Steam Deck 2 yet, but its appearance has sparked speculation that it could be intended for Valve’s next handheld.
