Naoki Yoshida addressed the possibility of a single-player Final Fantasy XIV during Fan Festival 2026 interviews in Anaheim, confirming the idea has been considered.
“Yes, I have thought about it.”
He pointed to ongoing resistance from parts of the series audience toward online entries.
“There are still a lot of people out there who look at an online Final Fantasy and they say, ‘Well, an online Final Fantasy is not a Final Fantasy.’”
The main constraint is development resources, with Yoshida stating that only the current Final Fantasy XIV team could deliver a standalone version at the expected level.
“While I do love to consider making a standalone Final Fantasy XIV, unfortunately the only team that could make a standalone Final Fantasy XIV, the best standalone Final Fantasy XIV, is the current Final Fantasy XIV team.”
He indicated this would only be feasible once work on the MMO is no longer the team’s primary focus.

Yoshida also addressed the possibility of external involvement, saying he is open to proposals despite the challenges.
“If there were people who are interested in creating a sort of standalone Final Fantasy… we would love to hear from them.”
He further noted that shifting focus away from the live game would likely not be well received by the current player base.
“If [a spin-off] happened, I’m sure XIV players would look at that project and go, ‘Yoshi, instead of focusing on some spin-off project, you should work on the main, actual Final Fantasy XIV game.’”
